Beware the devil horse
In which we look at an avocado warning and say hello to Idris.
There’s an evolution here
And it didn’t take very long. On Wednesday (or maybe even earlier) we started seeing graphics like this. And yes, sometimes these things look like avocados!
More than 16 million people, across more than 222 sq mi, are under an ENHANCED risk (3/5, orange) for severe weather this Friday.

Widespread, potentially intense severe thunderstorms are expected to develop.
Damaging winds and tornadoes are possible too.
That’s a pretty huge area. What I find interesting about this, is that the low pressure system that has been moving down the California coast is going to partially fuel this weather event, which Matthew Cappucci talks about in the video below (WaPo article if you’re interested in reading).
The storm system that will bring major severe weather to the central U.S. is currently rolling over the Intermountain West.

MyRadar meteorologist @MatthewCappucci takes us through setup and the northern threat in Iowa/Illinois, where destructive winds and tornadoes are likely.
And to cap this section off, here’s a reminder for what those risk categories mean.
What do the SPC risk categories mean? This graphics gives you the run down of the risk levels and what can be expected with each.

Some new retirees
Best wishes to Fiona and Ian.
WMO retires #Fiona and #Ian because of the death and destruction in 2022, replaces them with Farrah and Idris

We name #hurricanes to communicate hazards. Improved forecasts and disaster management have reduced casualties
#EarlyWarningsForAll are vital!

Hey, “Idris” is the next “I”. Not sure exactly how they came up with that but you can find out the process for naming hurricanes over here.

There are other ways
Another reminder to get a weather radio.
YES. The siren mentality kills. People should NEVER use them as a primary way of getting a tornado warning. This must change. https://t.co/JYp0hpk9HU

Use your low beams in fog
Otherwise the devil horse will get you.
Fog is expected to develop tonight and continue through Thursday morning. Areas of reduced visibility will be possible. Use caution when driving and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions! #cowx

Superior
If you hadn’t heard, Lake Superior is the greatest lake of all time.
Beautiful lake effect flow on Lake Superior today.

See the difference
I don’t even have to look hard! Looking good 😎
How it started vs. How it's going

We still love you Matthew
I tried to include the phrase "dangerous storms" in the headline of today's article, but instead I mistakenly typed "Dangerous storks could threaten 20 million Americans."

A good reminder
You’d have to click the tweet to see the image, but the atmospheric rivers (ARs) aren’t just the ones that hit California. They’re for the entire West coast.
It should be noted that most weather systems that come ashore have some sort of moisture tap or "atmospheric river" with them. Obviously the strongest, deepest ones are notable, but the water gets muddy in between. We have a long way to go on communicating ARs to the public

CoCoRaHS
Another fun weather related acronym! It stands for Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network. In other words, it’s a bunch of people across the globe that collect precipitation data, which scientists (and others) use for research. Pretty sweet. We started submitting our data in January.
Go Cuckoo for CoCoRahs! Become a volunteer weather watcher and join over 20k weather spotters world-wide! It is FREE, FUN & IMPORTANT! To learn more - go to CoCoRahs.org #cowx @NWSBoulder @ametsoc @CoCoRaHS
