Before we jump in, I wanted to say welcome to the new subscribers! Hope you enjoy your stay here 💙.
Let’s explore
There’s a pretty neat climate explorer tool that you can punch your location into to get both historical and projected climate data. You can read more about it here but this is an example of one of the graphs.

My new favorite place
It’s called Chugwater and it’s in Wyoming. It featured some tornado action recently which is almost as fascinating as its name.

What are the chances?
There’s a post up over on the ENSO blog that talks about how NOAA predicts the annual global temperature ranking. You can find the outlook itself on the NCEI website (the link is for May).

While we’re on the topic
It’s still hot in the central and southern states (some locations will see heat indices in the 110-120 range), and California is warming up now too. We’re not going to be crazy hot but this is our first legit round of heat.
But how do I know that summer is really here? Because this:
You knew something like this was coming
The 4th of July weekend is almost here, so I know you want to read about July climate conditions. Happy 4th!
Climatologically speaking, July is the hottest month of the year for the contiguous United States with an average temperature of 73.6°F. The average daytime high temperature is nearly 87°F, while the average nighttime low is around 60°F.
Weather West
Daniel Swain wrote up a quick post on the incoming heat and had office hours on Monday. Just a heads up if you watch the video, there were some A/V issues throughout the recording. My super brief notes:
- Quiet (and cool) weather in California but active (and hot 🔥) weather in lots of other places
- El Niño is intensifying, stronger event seems likely
- We’re going to warm up, not record breaking or super crazy
- Many of the fires in Canada could burn until winter
And just a couple random links
- If you’re tired of explaining climate change, let the BBC explain it for you
- Satellite footage of a recent derecho
