We made it, it's the weekend
In which we learn some things and crack some jokes.
Yep, that’s still a lot
Let’s check in on that water storage shall we? You can read a more detailed breakdown here.

I don’t want to rush 2024
But I’m going to be ready for it now with this calendar.

Some weather related clickbAIt
We mentioned the intersection of AI and weather once before. UC San Diego also published a post with some more examples recently. Although I’m a little tired of hearing about AI, there are certainly worthwhile applications.
You’re cut off
Here’s an excellent description of a cut-off low. Thank you Gerry!

What’s cool about this is that there was another one of these on the eastern side of the US, which was helping to form an omega block. If you want a brief intro on what that is, watch the first part of this video. Very cool.
Get your movie references/memes ready
They’re for real building an underwater lab. I don’t want to go there, but I’ll gladly monitor what happens from up here. I’m sure nothing bad happens in the deeps of the sea.
I’m running low on El Niño jokes
The World Meteorological Organization published an update recently. Just gonna pull this bit out from the article:
“We just had the eight warmest years on record, even though we had a cooling La Niña for the past three years and this acted as a temporary brake on global temperature increase. The development of an El Niño will most likely lead to a new spike in global heating and increase the chance of breaking temperature records,” said WMO Secretary-General Prof. Petteri Taalas.
You can read the latest on NPR too. The ENSO blog also wrote about the difficulty of forecasting El Niño in the spring, which we’ve mentioned before too.
What type are you?
Did you know there are different types of tornadoes? I can’t decide which one I’d be, maybe a stovepipe.
Gearing up for peak tornado season
Here’s a summary from WaPo on what’s been going on and what might be on the way. And of course, Tornado Titans is covering it too.
This is not a May the 4th be with you joke
Turns out, May 4th is also National Weather Observers Day! Happy belated NWOD to you!
Quick link/quick notes
Notes on Daniel Swain’s last office hours
A lot of the snow still hasn’t melted
Less worried about the mountains and foothills flooding
More worried about flooding in the Central Valley, San Joaquin Valley, and Tulare Lake basin (already having flooding issues)
El Niño is ya know, a thing
Happy weekend weather fam!
See you next time 💙
