Turn them lights on
In which we learn about virga and look at all the pretty colors.
You look radiant tonight
Virga is rain that falls through dry air and evaporates before it reaches the ground. It makes for some pretty neat visuals.
Radiant virga at sunset, sublime. #CAwx

A little self-promo
I’ve got initial versions of my own weather tools/apps ready to go. Just the basics for now but I think all the work to get the data in the apps is pretty much done. #retool #myradar #tomorrowio #nws https://t.co/Y4m96ONIS8

Turns out, March is the most likely time to see one in California.

data:
California tornadoes are not common, but they're also not nearly as rare as most folks believe. It would be very unusual for a year to pass without at least a couple of confirmed touchdowns somewhere in Golden State (though it is true that vast majority are comparatively weak).

Let’s see how we did
There’s a new ENSO Blog post out. It compares the winter outlook with what we’ve actually seen. At the end, there’s an interesting overview of how we ended up having the winter we’ve had in California.
Happy birthday
To the World Meteorological Organization!
WMO was born 150 years ago. The warming stripes from @ed_hawkins show how our climate has warmed during that time. And the warming will continue. #WorldMetDay #ClimateChange

Tornado: act 2
We had one in California but it feels pretty minor compared to what happened out East. Here’s a video.
Rolling Fork #mississippi monster. Damage is catastrophic. Multiple fatalities

I don’t know if this was for the same tornado (or set of tornadoes) as above, but the track was ~80 miles.
The supercell that produced a likely long track, wedge #tornado across the Mississippi Delta tracked for over 80 MILES. 🌪️ It went from the MS River through Rolling Fork, Silver City, & Tchula. Surveys will reveal if this was indeed one tornado or if it ever cycled. #MSwx

And a before and after look.
At least 26 people were killed as a powerful tornado tore through one of the poorest regions of the southern United States. Before and after satellite imagery, courtesy of @usdafsa and @planet, clearly shows the path of devastation in Rolling Fork, Mississippi.

You can find all kinds of places to donate online to help people impacted by the tornadoes, but here are two links if you’re interested in donating:
