It's not Friday but we can pretend
In which we stay resourceful and learn about eyewall replacement.
Grab some ice fam
Cuz we’re heating up. Although, we’re close enough to the coast that it likely won’t be too hot here. Still, this feels like a turn towards summer but we’ll see.
We’ve been fairly cool lately so the melting snowpack actually slowed a bit. By the time the next newsletter goes out, it seems likely it’ll speed back up.

Here’s an SF Chronicle article if you want a more detailed breakdown for CA, and a WaPo article too.
Like Groundhog Day but for the convective outlook
I feel like the convective outlooks have been like this for the last ~week.

There’s a lot out there coverage-wise but I’ll just share a few brief videos/gifs.

A recent band of storms moving through Mississippi. The leading edge just looks so crazy.

Tornado Titans also published an article about today’s outlook while I drafted the newsletter, so I’ll share that too!
Close enough
The Atlantic hurricane season technically starts June 1st, so let’s learn about eyewall replacement (autocorrect seems to think it should be eyeball replacement, but let’s not do that).

Wildfires + Pacific cooling?
A study was done that investigated the cooling effects on the Pacific ocean by wildfires in Australia. You can Google for various news articles, but here’s an excerpt from a recent SF Chronicle article.
Using computer simulations, Fasullo and his colleagues showed that emissions from the more than 40 million acres burned in wildfires in Australia three years ago tipped the El Niño-La Niña cycle.
And speaking of El Niño, the latest ENSO blog post is up.

How very resourceful
I’ve linked to lots of tools, resources, etc. in these newsletters so I’m going to build a page that puts them all in one place for easy reference. If you have any requests/suggestions, please let me know!
Stay safe, stay cool, stay awesome
See you next time weather fam. I’ll leave you with some foggy mornings, and some cloudy Colorado skies. It might not look like it, but the Colorado photos were taken right around the time a tornado warning went out for some areas just south of Denver!
