I’m tired of hearing about the chat bot
In which we read a report, learn about an origin story, and say hello to spring.
I’m sure you’ve heard
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) came out with a report recently. You might have heard about it. If you just want the headlines of the report, here you go. Or on Apple News if you prefer.
Hold that thought
I’m going to do a newsletter just devoted to the last storm that hit California, but here’s a teaser.
This is just……incredible

Some pretty amazing (and damaging) stuff ended up happening with that storm. We’ll take a deeper dive later.
An origin story
Back in 1948, this happened:
This event was the catalyst for the SPC you know today. https://t.co/97X2j2ouaV

Done with winter?
Well you’re in luck. It’s spring!
Spring has sprung — officially! 💐🌼🌺🌸

MyRadar meteorologist @MatthewCappucci breaks down what that means, the significance of the “equinox” and what type of weather we can expect.

It may not feel like it in some places, but you’ll warm up soon! Hang in there.
Another hint to what’s to come?
Remember when Australia was getting quite toasty? Well, turns out that could be related to El Niño.
Australia's heat wave sounds a lot like El Niño behavior.

Something to keep in the back of our minds for the extended forecast on the West Coast.
Just a quick blurb…
On water vapor satellite imagery. We share gifs and videos of this a lot, so it’s nice to know some of the details of what you’re seeing.

You’ve probably been hearing a lot about AI
It applies to weather of course too. Take that fancy chat bot.
AI can be used for much more than just a fancy chat bot. 🤖

As principal scientist @dryglick explains, AI is helping shape the next generation of weather prediction at MyRadar. 🌀
Up and to the right is good, right?
Seems like a lot.
Hard to overstate how remarkable this winter has been for water supply in Central CA. Per @mdettinger, current water storage in 4 Tulare Basin reservoirs is ~2x the 2003-2020 average. Enormous amount of water still locked up in record-breaking snowpack. #CAwx #CAwater

First things first
There’s a difference between these things.
We've received lots of questions regarding what is a landspout vs. a tornado. A landspout IS a tornado. It usually causes less damage than a "typical" tornado. Check out this Weather-Ready Nation graphic explaining the differences of a couple different tornado types. #CAwx
— NWS Los Angeles (@NWSLosAngeles) 4:58 PM ∙ Mar 22, 2023
Now that we’re good on definitions, check this out. This is in Los Angeles.
@ABC7 I caught it one video.

And here’s a full breakdown on the tornado.

Brief meteorological breakdown of the surprise tornado that occurred in the Los Angeles metro area just a few hours ago. (Hint: 3CAPE!) #CAwx
A band with some longevity
It’s like The Rolling Stones of cloud bands.
The band of cloud currently over the UK extends all the way to The Bahamas, which is 4,200 miles away!
— Liam Dutton (@liamdutton) 3:34 PM ∙ Mar 22, 2023
Perturbations in the jet stream are causing areas of low pressure to form along this band of cloud, before pushing them towards NW Europe.

I will always share these
They’re just good to know. Share them with your friends.
Never a bad idea to review the severe thunderstorm risk categories issued daily by SPC, NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center.
