Dress for the 70s
In which we learn about rainbows and space junk.
We got an upgrade
It was a busy weekend but we got this set up just before the sun set on Friday.
What a week. So much going on but check this out. I’m still working out the kinks but I have my dream weather station almost completely set up. Managed to just beat the sunset. @davisinst @BrushyWeather

Sediment from space!
You can see this right from the beaches too. The colors always catches me off guard. You don’t see a muddy ocean very often, or at least I don’t.
Incredible satellite image from space showing all the sediment pouring out into the Pacific from gushing rivers across Northern California.

Also notice the flooded Salinas Valley and muddied waters of the San Francisco Bay and rivers across the Sacramento Valley.
I see the future
But not well enough.
Predicting the future is hard. Ask any meteorologist; we knew this well before March Madness 2023. https://t.co/QGhkXZk8NP

Waiting to see how this plays out
People talk pretty regularly about the future of TV meteorologists. People get weather info from so many places now. Spann covered it a bit in the TED talk we covered previously.
There will come a day in the very near future where TV is “last” at a station.

Each market will have a powerhouse station that dominates social… and content will be curated first for that, and then re-racked for conventional newscasts. Stations will become content production.
Happy (belated) St. Patrick’s Day!
Time to learn about rainbows. I didn’t know there were so many different kinds.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

No, you cannot search for a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Sorry.
Rainbows are cool
But I think sun pillars are cooler.

Let’s list the side effects
No, this isn’t a drug commercial. It’s lake effect snow. Lake effect snow is pretty common but the lakes have very little ice cover right now, and that cold air moving over the relatively warm water creates lake effect snow.
Check out this time lapse at @FlyGRFord today as rounds of lake effect snow bands pushed inland replacing sunshine with visibilities briefly down to 1/8th of a mile at times.

No thanks.
How long will it take for the ice to melt?! SUV ENCASED in ice thanks to Lake Erie! @spann @andyparkertv

Enough with the snow
Let’s warm up in… Australia?
Hottest March day on record for parts of NSW today as temperatures soar into the high 30s/low 40s.
— Bureau of Meteorology, Australia (@BOM_au) 3:44 AM ∙ Mar 19, 2023
Cool change will move through tonight/Monday, with showers and storms returning to SE Aus from Tuesday.
Heat will continue in WA this week.

For context, 40 degrees Celsius is 104 Fahrenheit.
Just do what the Weather Channel says
“The Weather Channel said dress for the mid 70s today.” So good.
My mom just sent this to me in a text. 😆

Space junk
It’s not a UFO or giant meteors heading toward earth, it’s space junk I guess.
"According to famed astronomer, Jonathan McDowell, the lights many people saw was likely space junk."

Welcome to Astronomical Spring
I love these animations.
Today the #VernalEquinox will occur at 5:24 p.m. EDT in the Northern Hemisphere, marking the start of #AstronomicalSpring!

This animation shows the angle of the sun changing from last year's vernal equinox through today due to the Earth's tilt.
Offices hours with Daniel Swain
We’re getting more rain on Tuesday and he’s doing office hours at 3pm (PST).
After a much-needed break, yet another high-impact storm is taking aim at central & southern CA. Why is there so much uncertainty with this one, and what will impacts be? Today's virtual office hours will be at 3pm PT. #CAwx #CAwater
